Le Percheron est une race équine, apparue probablement vers le VIIIe siècle dans une région située au sud de la Normandie autour de Mortagne-au-Perche (Orne) et de Nogent-le-Rotrou (Eure-et-Loir).
Le Percheron est un cheval de grande taille, de hauteur au garrot de 1,65 à 1,85 m et dont le poids adulte peut atteindre de 900 à 1200 kg. La robe est grise, souvent pommelée, noire ou blanche. Le corps est compact et musclé, avec de fortes jambes, mais aussi une grande élégance qu'il devrait à des croisements avec des chevaux arabes vers le VIIe siècle.
Cheval de trait puissant, le Percheron est capable de tirer de lourdes charges au pas. Il est docile et facile à manœuvrer. Il peut être utilisé aussi bien pour les travaux agricoles ou forestiers que pour l'attelage et le trait rapide.
