Caen

Capitale de la Basse-Normandie et préfecture du Calvados, Caen est une ville industrielle qui compte environ 200 000 habitants avec sa banlieue. La ville a été détruite aux trois-quarts en 1944. Depuis elle a retrouvé toute son activité et pris un visage nouveau avec ses maisons reconstruites en « pierre de Caen ».

La « Ville aux cent clochers » est une intéressante ville d’art.

The Church of St. Etienne of the Abbaye aux Hommes was begun about 1066 by Duke William under Lanfranc who became its first abbot.

Founded by Queen Matilda in 1062, the Abbaye aux Dames rises to the east of the castle.

L’église Saint Etienne de l’Abbaye aux Hommes fut commencée vers 1066 par le duc Guillaume sous la direction de Lefranc qui en devint le premier abbé.

Fondée par la reine Mathilde en 1062, l’Abbaye aux Dames s’élève à l’est du château.

Dégagé et mis en valeur depuis la dernière guerre, le Château et les remparts construits par Guillaume et ses successeurs ont retrouvé leur caractère authentique.

Restored since the last war, the castle and ramparts built by William and his successors have found again their authentic character.

Capital of “Basse Normandie” and prefecture of Calvados, Caen is an industrial city with about 200,000 inhabitants including its suburbs. The town was three quarters destroyed in 1944. Since then it has been rebuilt with many houses finished in "Caen stone".

The “Ville aux cent clochers” (Town with hundred bell towers) is an interesting art city.
