Sa rencontre avec Jean Cocteau en 1937, lors d'une audition pour la mise en scène de sa réécriture d'Œdipe Roi, marque le véritable lancement de sa carrière. A la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, Cocteau écrit pour lui « La Belle et la Bête », un film très difficile à tourner, et auquel personne ne croyait. Marais entre alors dans la légende.
Il tournera par la suite dans de nombreux films avec les plus grandes vedettes sous la direction des plus grands cinéastes.
