Cherbourg

Cherbourg-Octeville (de son nom complet) est une des sous-préfectures du département de la Manche. La ville compte environ 90 000 habitants avec son agglomération. Bien que mondialement connue grâce à ses « Parapluies », la ville de Cherbourg n’a jamais eu – à ma connaissance – l’honneur de figurer sur un timbre.

Cherbourg-Octeville (its true name) is one of the sub-prefectures of the « Manche » department. The town counts about 90 000 inhabitants with the suburbs. The name of Cherbourg is known worldwide due to the film “Les parapluies de Cherbourg” (Cherbourg umbrellas) but as far as I know, no stamp has been printed for the town.

La prise de Cherbourg, les 26 et 27 juin 1944, devait marquer une étape décisive de la bataille de Normandie. Dès sa remise en service, le port fut utilisé pour le débarquement massif du matériel. Le pipe-line immergé PLUTO (Pipe Line Under The Ocean), reliant l’île de Wight à Cherbourg, débita à partir du 12 août 1944, une partie de l’essence nécessaire aux armées.

At the end of the war, Cherbourg was taken by the allies (June, 26th and 27th – 1944). It was an important step in the Battle of Normandy. Just after its reopening, the harbor was used for unloading of material. An under sea pipe-line known as "PLUTO” (Pipe Line Under The Ocean), was lunched to link Cherbourg to Wight island. On and after August, 12th a part of the gasoline for the armies ran trough it.
